As alcohol lowers vasopressin levels, the body releases more water, increasing the risk of dehydration and resulting headaches. (News 18 Hindi)

Speaking to News18, Dr Deepika Sagar, Head of the Department of Neurology at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh said that understanding these factors is essential for effective management of hangover symptoms.

Many individuals experience a headache after drinking alcohol, commonly known as a hangover. Although it is widely believed that the quality and quantity of alcohol can trigger these painful periods, health experts emphasize that the ingredients in the drink also play a significant role.

Speaking to News18, Dr Deepika Sagar, Head of the Department of Neurology at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh said that understanding these factors is essential for effective management of hangover symptoms.

“Drinking alcohol leads to dehydration by disrupting the production of a hormone called vasopressin, which helps the kidneys retain water. When alcohol lowers vasopressin levels, the body releases more water, increasing the risk of dehydration and resulting headaches,” says Dr Sagar.

According to Dr. Sagar, the quality of alcohol affects headaches, but this is not the only reason. Low-quality alcohol contains more by-products called congeners, which increase headaches and other hangover symptoms. These congeners are produced during the alcohol making process and are found particularly in dark spirits such as red wine, whiskey and brandy.

A scientific reason for a hangover or headache

Dr Sagar explains that high levels of congeners in alcohol can lead to more headaches. Ethanol, the main component of alcohol, affects blood sugar levels, which can lead to headaches, dizziness and fatigue.

In addition, frequent urination can cause dehydration, further increasing the likelihood of headaches. The presence of adulterants or harmful chemicals in low quality alcohol can also contribute to headaches.

How to avoid a hangover?

Dr Deepika Sagar says that high-quality alcohol contains fewer congeners, which reduce the chances of headaches. Drinking more water alongside alcohol can help prevent dehydration and reduce the likelihood of headaches.

It is also wise to avoid too much alcohol, as this can increase headaches and hangovers. Dr Sagar also said that alcohol not only causes headaches but can also affect other organs, including the liver. Therefore, she encourages people to consider staying away from alcohol.
