Daily Digital Desk News: color change On the day of the swings, what he smelled on his body thinking it was an herb, a harmless colour, or what he gently applied to his cheeks thinking it was a colorful dress, was later seen, when he picked it up , that Kalgham is running. It turned out that the ‘harmless’ herb was mixed with harmful stubborn chemicals. Or mix red or ocher with the color he thought was green. Many people have been ‘victims’ of this color change on swing day. Recently, many parties are suffering from this change of color in the field of politics. And of course we are the victims.

swing and party. Colorism and factionalism. Both are running side by side with Bengal politics in full spring. The occasion is Question and Vote (Lok Sabha 2024). Swinging during the voting season adds another dimension to the celebrations. What color is on whose body, what is the significance of which colour. All discussions about this. But the biggest debate is about who changed skin color when, and how much benefit was gained from changing that color. Let’s look at the color change history of each such ‘chameleon’.

Arjun Singh: No other leader in the recent past could show an example of changing colors like Arjun Singh in Bengal politics. This one is blue and white and this one is ocher. Arjuna’s political career is long. However, in this long political career, Arjun has not set a precedent for changing colours. Arjun’s father was a prominent Congress leader. He himself became an adviser on a Congress ticket in the mid-nineties. Later, he followed Mamata Banerjee and joined Trinamool. Arjun was in Trinamool for almost two decades. He has been MLA several times. He also became the minister of the state. He joined BJP without getting a ticket before Lok Sabha elections 2019. However, Trinamool tried to hold back Arjun till the last minute. But it didn’t work. Arjun contested the Barakpur polls on a BJP ticket with the desire to do “public service” as an MP. Go win. But he could not survive in BJP for long. He returned to the Trinamool within a year after the Ekush assembly elections. It was hoped that Trinamool would at least give Lok Sabha tickets on twenty four. After Partha Bhowmik’s name was announced as the Barakpur candidate from the ruling party’s brigade platform, Trinamool left again. Go back to that BJP. The Gerua camp again nominated him for Barakpur. Now after the polls to see if Arjun stays ocher or changes colors again, changes party.

Biswajit Das: Biswajit Das, the Trinamool candidate from Bangaon, is no less than Arjun when it comes to party switching. Bishwajit Das started his political career from the grassroots. Having joined the party for a long time, before the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, he might have hoped for a Lok Sabha ticket. But the Trinamool gave hope to Mamata Thakur from Bangaon in 19th. Biswajit switched parties and joined the BJP. He became an MLA on a BJP ticket in 2021. But Mamata Banerjee was still in his ‘heart’. Biswajit returned to the grassroots within a few months after the assembly polls. Although he is still a BJP MLA on paper, Trinamool has nominated Biswajit from Bangaon by twenty four votes.

Krishna Kalyani: Krishna Kalyani (Krishna Kalyani) is a businessman from Raiganj. He is a newcomer in politics. However, despite being a newcomer, he has already turned his hands in the party change. He joined the BJP before the 1980 assembly. He also became an MLA on a BJP ticket in the Legislative Assembly. But he joined Trinamool in October that year. Detractors say that Krishna has to take shelter under the umbrella of the ruling party to run his business smoothly. Speaker Biman Banerjee also made him PAC chairman in the assembly. Trinamool has given ticket to that Krishna Kalyani in Lok Sabha. Interestingly, like Biswajit, Krishna Kalyani is also a BJP MLA.

Crown Jewels: Mukut Mani Adhikari is a doctor by profession. His name appeared in the field of Bengal politics for the first time in the Lok Sabha elections 2019. BJP first announced the name of Mukutmani as the candidate for the Ranaghat constituency. But he is still in the service of the state health department. It is alleged that, at that time, the state government did not give the necessary permission to the crown. Jagannath Sarkar became the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Ranaghat constituency. And he won. Mukutmani later became the MLA from Ranaghat South constituency on a BJP ticket. His hope was that the party would nominate him from Ranaghat in twenty-four hours. But Gerua gave the ticket to the outgoing MP in favor of Shibir. Perhaps it was because of that anger that Mukutmani joined the Trinamool. The ruling party of the state has nominated him from Ranaghat. He is also a BJP MLA. Another reason for Mukutmani’s grassroots yoga floating in some quarters. In fact, there were serious allegations of domestic violence against Mukutmani while in the BJP. The state police also started an investigation against him. Detractors said the sudden addition of the BJP to the crown had slowed down the pace of the investigation.

Soumendu has: the youngest political member of Shantikunj. So far, most of the achievements in politics belong to the lineage of father Shishi Adhikari and grandfather Shuvendu Adhikari. Soumendu Adhikari has been a member of Trinamool since the beginning. On behalf of the ruling party, Kanthi also sat as the chairman of the municipality. But Ekushe followed the path of Dada Shuvendu Adhikari and joined the BJP. His entry into politics was due to family sources and he changed colors due to family sources. He has been doing BJP for the last few years. This time BJP has nominated him for Lok Sabha from Kanthi family seat.

Tapas Roy: The oldest and perhaps most surprising name on this list. Tapas Roy, a politician of the Ajanm Congress genre, is now in the BJP. Tapas Roy has been a follower of the Prime Minister since the student council days. Many say he is one of the ‘underprivileged’ leaders of Trinamool. A staunch follower of Mamata, Tapas worked at various levels of the Trinamool organization but entered parliamentary politics for the first time in 2016. That too as an MLA from the Baranagar constituency, where his workplace is far from North Kolkata. Although he became an MLA again in 2021, he was not made a minister. Instead, the posts are randomly assigned. Although he was made the Trinamool North Kolkata District president for some time, he did not hold that post for long. The party has always given more priority than him to another senior leader in North Kolkata, Sudip Banerjee. That is the main reason for the tastelessness of Tapas on the ground. Finally, at the beginning of the 24th Lok Sabha, Tapas left the Trinamool with great pride. He joined the BJP. He also resigned from his post as MLA. BJP has pitted Tapas against Sudeep from North Kolkata. The question is, will the person who has done Congress politics for life, come to the end of his political life and stay in a party that believes in completely opposite ideals? Or will it not take long for it to change color from ocher again?

The list of color changes is not limited to those discussed above. This trend of changing color in Bengal politics is becoming a regular occurrence in recent times. Every day in some part of the state some leader is always joining some other party from some party. Politics change colors, leaders change colors. And among these thousands of colors, the most important part of democracy is somehow neglected, Amjamta.
