New Delhi: Dalit student Dhananjay won the JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union) election as president. He won with the support of student unions belonging to the Left. Ajmira got 1,676 votes while Dhananjay who contested from All India Students Association (AISA) got 2,598 votes. This was a great success.

Dhananjay is a student from Gaya, Bihar. He is doing his PhD at the School of Arts and Aesthetics (Aesthetics) at JNU. Students were impressed by Dhananjay’s speech during the presidential debate that the higher education funding agency (HEFA) loans taken by the universities were increasing the fee burden on the students. He also promised to do his best to solve the problems related to water, health and infrastructure on the campus. On the other hand, Dhananjay demanded the release of the student leaders arrested on charges of sedition. While Dhananjay was preceded by Batti Lal Bairwa who served as JNU student president in 1996-97. He contested and won that election from the Left Students’ Union.
