Household consumers in Bihar will receive cheap electricity during the day and expensive electricity in the evening. The electric company has started preparations for this. According to officials at the IEC headquarters, today the industrial units receive the facility of time-of-day (TOD) rate. Now this facility

.

This may be included in the tariff proposal to be submitted to the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission in November. The new system will enter into force after receiving the Commission’s approval. Common people will benefit directly from this. According to officials, it will depend on the will of the consumer. Consumers who want to switch to this mode will get the benefit of TOD. Consumers who generate grid-connected electricity on their roof by installing rooftop solar will receive a net-metering payment facility.

Today there are 2.7 million electricity consumers in the country. Of which 50% are in the village and 33% in urban areas. This new system will be implemented only after the approval of the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Why a time-of-day rate for domestic consumers

There is an initiative by the central and state governments to set up solar power plants. Its electricity is cheap. Due to this, green energy will be available at cheaper rates to consumers. Electricity will be available from the thermal power plant at night. This electricity is expensive because of the coal consumption.

What is the hourly rate per day and its benefits

An hourly rate per day is a way to determine the cost of electricity based on the time of consumption. Thus the electricity rate is higher during peak hours, while it is lower during off-peak hours. The purpose of this tariff is to encourage consumers to use electricity when demand is low. It helps in managing energy consumption and network load.

When there is cheap electricity during the day, consumers will do most of their work. Currently, this system is suitable for commercial establishments. If this is also applicable to common consumers, they will also start getting benefits.

Do not replace a smart meter

There will be no need to change Smart Prepaid even after applying OD tariff. Consumers can use prepaid smart meters as net metering after installing solar plants. Then the problem of the average electricity bill will end.

What will the day and night rate be?

Electricity will be available at a 20 percent lower rate between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Between 17:00 and 23:00, electricity will be available at a 20 percent higher rate.
