A consumer court has ordered the railway CEO to pay over Rs 1.08 lakh to a passenger whose luggage was stolen during his journey. The commission cited the negligence and deficiencies in the services of Indian Railways.
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Committee (Central District) heard a complaint that in January 2016, some unknown passengers stole a bag containing valuables worth Rs 80,000 from a passenger while they were traveling between Jhensi and Gwalior in January 2016. The passenger was traveling in the reserved car of Malwa Express.
The complaint states that it is the railway’s responsibility to provide a safe and comfortable journey as well as to protect passengers’ luggage. The committee chairman Indrajit Singh and official member Bansal said that it has the jurisdiction to hear the case. The complainant boarded the train from New Delhi and the journey continued till it reached Indore.
