Islamabad (Monitoring Desk) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has prepared a draft of 23 points based on judicial reforms while making significant progress in the constitutional amendment. According to sources, the JUI has proposed to establish a permanent bench of the Supreme Court, where constitutional petitions will be heard by 5 senior judges led by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, instead of establishing a Constitutional Court.

The draft recommends retaining the existing powers of the Supreme Court and High Courts, while abolishing the trial of civilians in military courts. The retirement age of judges will be maintained at 65, and Articles 8 and 199 of the Constitution will remain the same.

According to sources, the JUI also did not propose any amendment to Article 63A of the Constitution. There have been calls to restore the Eighteenth Amendment procedure for appointing judges, which included the power to appoint judges from Parliament.

The JUI has also proposed to give more importance to the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology in the legislation. According to sources, JUI will soon share the draft with PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) to build consensus on the constitutional amendment.
