Guwahati: A violent clash between two groups in Jorbat on October 2 has raised serious allegations of police collusion with local coal syndicates as many reports point to deliberate inaction by the Jorbat police. The incident, which left several people injured, highlights ongoing conflicts in the Maghlia-Assam border region and has raised concerns about the involvement of law enforcement officials in criminal activities.

The clash, which reportedly involved members of a coal syndicate, took place at the vital Jorbat Junction, where mobs are supposed to control the flow of coal-carrying vehicles from Meghalaya to Assam. The allegations indicate that only selected trucks, pre-registered with the syndicate, are allowed through, while others are barred from entry. Eyewitnesses claim that a group of 10-15 men, along with police officers from the Jorbat outpost, were involved in the fight.

Meanwhile, a regional journalist who came to cover the event was attacked by the group while the police stood by. The journalist, who asked to remain anonymous, told about the experience and noted: "I arrived near Jorbat outpost after receiving information about a serious altercation. While I was waiting for my team, I saw a police car speeding towards the scene and I started recording it. Before I could do anything else, a group of men approached me, grabbed my phone and assaulted me, all in the presence of a police officer."

The journalist continued, "I identified myself as a journalist, but they didn’t flinch. Only when my senior colleagues arrived and started documenting the attack did the group flee in several vehicles."

The entire event, the journalist claimed, was recorded on CCTV footage outside the Jorbat outpost. Despite this, no action appears to have been taken by the police. "The police were complicit in the attack, and obviously working with these syndicates," claimed the journalist.

A similar complaint was filed at the Birnihat outpost by a local resident of the 12th Mile, Majlaya, who was injured during the confrontation. Now the victim demands justice, claiming that the police deliberately turned a blind eye to the violence and insecurity of the residents.

However, when contacted, an official from Jorbat outpost denied the allegations. "No complaints were filed in this regard. The media seems to have blown it out of proportion." said the official, trying to downplay the seriousness of the incident.

Despite these claims, the allegations against the Jorbat police point to a broader and more troubling issue of collusion between law enforcement agencies and criminal syndicates operating in the region. Without any action from higher authorities, public confidence in the justice system will further erode.

The lack of accountability and transparency in the police has sparked outrage among local residents, who feel that justice has been denied. "Clearly something corrupt is going on here. The police protect the syndicates, not the people." said one anonymous local resident.

As the situation in Jorbat continues to escalate, calls for an independent investigation into the alleged connection between the police and the coal bakeries are growing. However, with no formal complaints or action taken, it remains to be seen if justice will be served, or if this incident will be another example of the failure of law enforcement to protect the public.

For now, the people of Jorbat remain trapped between seemingly corrupt forces, with little hope of seeing justice prevail.
