Chris Hemsworth heaps praise on CWG gold medalist Mirabai Chanu, says ‘she deserves Thor’s hammer’

New Delhi: Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth, best known for portraying the Norse god of thunder, Thor, has praised Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, saying “she deserves” her MCU character’s hammer. The accolade comes after Chanu recently won India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

In the women’s 49kg final, she lifted 201kg to win the gold medal.

Following his win, Chanu shared a celebratory tweet which was quoted by a social media user who tagged Hemsworth saying, “Time for Thor to drop his hammer Chris Hemsworth” and the actor noticed the tweet and immediately responded. “She deserves it. Congratulations, Saikom, you legend.” Chanu ACHIed his gratitude by sharing, “Thank you so much @chrishemsworth always love to see you”.

In the Marvel Comics and accompanying cinematic universe, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is a magical weapon that can only be lifted by those worthy of it. Hemsworth’s tweet went viral on the micro-blogging site as fans and followers of the actor praised him for acknowledging Chanu’s remarkable performance at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

“Now that’s an ‘awesome’ gesture from tinsel town’s Marvel Studios actor to an Indian sportsperson,” wrote one user.

Talking about his gold-winning performance, in his maiden attempt in the snatch category, Sanu made a great start and successfully lifted 84 kg. Chanu successfully lifted the required weight of 88 kg in his second. He did his personal best at the level representing India. In his final attempt in the snatch category, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist showed incredible strength and failed to lift 90kg.

In the clean and jerk lift category, Sanu showed impressive power lifting 109 kg in his first attempt. In his second attempt he lifted 113 kg. In his final attempt in this category, he failed to lift 115 kg, but he did not fail to win India’s first gold medal in this multi-sport event in 2022.
