Canada’s Felix Auger-Eliasima was knocked out of the Monte Carlo Masters clay-court tournament on Wednesday after dropping a second-round match 6-4, 7-5 to Italy’s Lorenzo Songo.
Auger-Eliasima, ranked 35th in the world, fired just three aces while committing 13 unforced errors in the two hour and two minute match.
Sonego, ranked 57, was a “lucky loser” replacement for world No. 3 Carlos Alcarez of Spain, who withdrew from the tournament on Tuesday with a muscle injury in his right forearm.
With the win, Sunigo evened his career record against Auger-Eliasima at 2-2.
Next, he will play in the round of 16 against Zhizhen Zhang of China or Hugo Humbert of France, ranked 14.
