Succession star Brian Cox has been named as Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s latest Patron.

The role will see the Scottish actor act as Patron of the festival, alongside co-patron Eddie Izzard and honorary President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

From an early career in the 1960s, Brian has created a career full of iconic roles, including the first incarnation of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter (1986), sinister CIA chief Ward Abbott in the Bourne franchise (2002-2004) and, more recently, billionaire patriarch Logan Roy in Succession.

Brian has a strong history as a supporter of the arts – he is a patron of the Scottish Youth Theater in Glasgow, The Old Rep in Birmingham, the British American Drama Academy in London and The Space in his native Dundee.

In 1965 he was among the members who founded the Royal Lyceum Theater Company in Edinburgh and most recently he was named an honorary patron of the campaign to modernize the city’s historic King’s Theatre.

‘Scottish performing arts culture is firmly rooted in my DNA, and it’s impossible to talk about Scottish performing arts culture without mentioning Edinburgh Festival Fringe,’ says Brian.

‘I am delighted to come on board as an ambassador for this amazing event, and to promote its well-deserved reputation as a springboard and proving ground for generations of performing artists from the past, present and future. ‘

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, said: ‘To say we are delighted to have Brian on board is an understatement.

‘He has done so much to promote homegrown artistic talent, not only through his incredible CV of acting work but also through his sponsorship and support for organizations all over this country.

‘He has set an iconic example with his own artistic journey, and is an inspiration to the established and emerging artists who bring their magic to the Edinburgh Fringe every year.

‘We are delighted to have him as a champion, and welcome his support in the months and years to come.’
