GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in Haryana for the third consecutive term, securing leaders in 49 assembly seats, according to the latest trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Despite strong anti-incumbency sentiment and a strong challenge from the Congress, the BJP managed to thwart a potential Congress comeback, consolidating its position in the state. As of 4:15 pm, the Congress is leading in 36 seats, while independent candidates have taken the lead in three, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is leading in two constituencies.

Notably, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and independent candidate Savitri Jindal all won their respective seats.

In contrast, INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala faced defeat, and Janayak Janata Party (JJP) candidate Dushyant Chautala trailed. Other significant losses include BJP leaders Jan Chand Gupta, OP Dhankar and Haryana Lokhit Party’s Gopal Kanda.

One of the major election highlights is the victory of the Congress’s Vinesh Phogat, the Olympian-wrestler-turned-politician, who won her maiden election in Jholana by defeating Yogesh Kumar of the BJP by 6,015 votes.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to get any seats in the assembly. The counting of votes, which began at 08:00 under tight security, initially indicated a close contest. However, as the day progressed, BJP consolidated its lead, overtaking the Congress.

This BJP victory comes despite Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s early confidence of achieving a landslide victory, underscoring the party’s role and grassroots work. While exit polls predicted a surge in the Congress, the BJP’s sustained momentum led to its stunning victory.
