New Delhi: The NDA government approved Bengali as a classical language. A total of five languages, including Bengali, were elevated to ‘classical languages’ or ‘classical languages’ in the cabinet meeting on Thursday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee decided on the Centre’s decision. The Prime Minister himself said so on X-Handle.

On 12 October 2004, the Government of India introduced a new type of language as “Classical Language”. Tamil is considered as the first classical language.

Since then, Sanskrit in 2005, Telugu and Kannada in 2008, Malayalam in 2013 and Odia in 2014 were awarded as classical languages ​​respectively. The Committee of Linguistics Experts under the Sahitya Akademi approved the designation of classical languages ​​to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit and Ahmia apart from Bengali in July this year. The Cabinet gave its approval on that day.
