A BC man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a truckload of bread from a grocery store in Grande Prairie, Alta., earlier this month.

Mark Anderson Mitchell, 44, a resident of Prince George, BC, was charged with motor vehicle theft, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to comply with a probation order.

The charges stem from an incident on 6 June. RCMP responded to a report that a man had allegedly stolen a Wonder Bread truck from Save On Foods in the northern city of Alberta, shortly before noon and was driving away “erratically.”

In a tongue-in-cheek press release, RCMP said officers spotted the truck as it attempted to leave the city.

Other units, including the General Investigation Section, the Special Investigation Unit, the Crime Reduction Unit and Police Dog Services, were asked to follow the lorry while officers fitted spike belts.

After the spikes were deployed, the truck stopped in a Walmart parking lot in Grande Prairie.

“Two members of the public, who were not loitering around, observed the suspect walking away and restrained him long enough for officers to make the arrest,” RCMP said in a news release Saturday.

“When searching the vehicle, it was noticed that the man had started to eat the bread and, according to some criminals, had ignored the crust.”

Mitchell was brought before a justice of the peace and then remanded in custody, police said.

He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie on Monday.

“Fortunately most of the bread was spared, however, after the damage, the truck itself was toast,” said Sgt. Michael Jaszczyszyn in the statement.

Alberta RCMP are reminding the public to eat their crust, adding that it’s always better to “try to earn some honest crust.”
