Assam floods: More than 2.96 lakh affected in 19 districts Achi-News

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened with 19 districts exposed under flood waters affecting 2,96,384 population from 979 villages under 48 revenue circles, according to the official bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday.

Karimganj is the worst affected district in the flood with 2,45,379 residents from 280 villages under Nilmabazar, Patharkandi, RK Nagar, Karimganj and Darpur revenue circles affected by the flood.

The 19 affected districts are Kamrup, South Salmara, Goalpara, Nagaon, Bungaigaon, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Drang, Nalbari, Karimganj, Udalguri, Tamulpur, Hailkandi, Biswanath, Barpata, Cachar, Bexa, Bejali and Sunitpur.

In Bongaigaon district, 334 hectares of crop lands were submerged in flood waters in Srijangram.

In Drang district, 700 meter LT conductors were damaged in Raja Haveli, Channibari, Bagarkash villages under Mangaladai pub revenue circle due to heavy rain and floods.

In Gulfra district, the water level of the Habari river is overflowing in Dodnoi due to blockage of drainage in a pond that is under construction.

Kokrajhar and Kamrup districts were affected by urban floods.

In Kokrajhar, the water table is slowly decreasing with the decrease in rainfall.

In the Kamrup metro district, rainwater has caused water scarcity in many places in Guwahati city, including Azra and Darfur Natun Basti areas.

81 aid camps and 24 aid distribution centers were opened for affected people.

A total of 1,21,166 people, including 27 pregnant women and 3,059 children, received shelter in the aid camps.

10,827 prisoners who are not in the camp received relief materials.

2,53,413 animals were affected throughout the country by the flood.

1269.56 quintals of rice, 185.14 quintals of dal, 154.18 quintals of salt and 5428.06 liters of mustard oil were distributed among the affected people.

Meanwhile, IMD has predicted light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal Sub-Himalayan.

A cyclonic circulation hovering over northeast Assam, along with strong southwesterly and southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring widespread rains and severe weather conditions to northeast India over the next few days.
