Himanta addressed the matter in a video shared on social media and said: “The electricity bill of every minister, senior government officers, chief minister and chief secretary’s house has been paid by the state government so far from the budget. We have already informed our employees and everyone that we are not allowed to collect electricity bills from the government if we stay in quarters. As a first step, the Prime Minister and the Chief Secretary will pay their bills themselves, starting from July 1. We are doing this so that due to the losses incurred due to non-payment of the electricity bill, the Electricity Board will not have to increase the electricity charges. Until now, since the last 75 years, the many Chief Ministers of Assam and even I got a free electricity bill for 3 years.”

“From July 2024, all public servants will have to pay for their electricity consumption,” the Assam chief minister added.
