Maurice Corry (Conservative, North Lomond), who had been protesting at the start of the meeting, drew both diamonds. And Councilor Douglas Philland (Independent, Mid Argyll) pulled the eight of spades.

For council leader, in alphabetical order Councilor Robin Currie (Liberal Democrats, Kintyre and the Islands) drew the six of spades.

Councilor Jim Lynch (SNP, South Oban and the Islands) drew the 10 spades.

The results of the votes mean that the opposition partnership led by the SNP has taken the reins of power, with the previous TALIG administration (Argyll, Lomond and the Isles Group) – which includes Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and independents – now in control.

It is anticipated that the increase in council tax will be reversed at another special meeting of the full council, which is to be held on Monday, April 15.
