In Jalgaon, Maharashtra, on Friday, an angry mob attacked the police station demanding the handover of the accused Umaji Bheel (35), who was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering a 6-year-old girl. The attack injured 14 policemen, including an inspector.
The police officer said that the stone-throwing incident outside Jamnar police station happened around 9:30 pm on Thursday night. On the night of June 11, a six-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped and murdered in the village of Chinchakheda Shiver in Jamnar. The accused fled the scene taking advantage of the darkness but was arrested by the police on Thursday. After receiving information about the arrest, the girl’s family members, her relatives and local residents gathered outside the police station and themselves began to demand that the accused be handed over to them for punishment. During this period, some people also set fire to public property. In the end the police used light force to disperse the crowd.
