The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) on Thursday informed the High Court that a High Level Review Committee (HLRC) headed by former Supreme Court Justice Indu Malhotra has been set up to assess the institution’s performance in the last five years. The division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha P Mayi is hearing a PIL suo motu on the issue. During the hearing, Advocate Kamal Trivedi, appearing for GNLU, informed the Board of Directors that the Board of Directors of the University held a meeting on March 23 and decided to form a high-level inquiry committee. Apart from Justice Indu Malotra, the committee also includes Attorney General R Venkataramani and former additional chief secretary of the state finance department MM Srivastava will be a member.
A sub-committee was also appointed to establish an internal complaints committee
Advocate GNLU Trivedi said, “A sub-committee has also been formed by the university to reconstitute a transparent and vigilant internal grievance committee. This will include Additional Advocate General Manisha Lubkumar Shah and Senior Advocate Asiyam Pandya.” The council also directed the university management to immediately appoint a full-time registrar to GNLU. After considering GNLU’s arguments, Chief Justice Sunita Aggarwal directed the university to submit an action taken report before the next date of hearing on April 29.
What does it matter
In a report published in the newspaper on September 22, the issue of harassment of two GNLU students was raised. The students affected include a gay student and a female student. There is an allegation of the rape of a student by a classmate. The Supreme Court became aware of this report in the media and began hearing the case. The High Court said during the hearing that this report is actually scary.
