Guwahati: Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh has been appointed as the next chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and will take over on September 30, when the current chief, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhary, retires.

A distinguished fighter pilot, Air Marshal Singh currently serves as the Deputy Commander of the Air Force and has 40 years of experience in various command positions and operations. Inducted into the fighter pilot stream in December 1984, he was in charge of an operational fighter squadron and a forward air base along the Indian borders.
Notably, he also played a key role in the development and testing of the indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas. He was the Project Manager (Flight Test) at the National Flight Test Centre, responsible for the flight testing of the Tejas. Just 10 days before his appointment, he flew the Tejas fighter jet in Jodhpur during the multi-national exercise, Tarang Shakti.
Singh additionally commanded the Central Command in Perigarj and served as Air Defense Commander in the South Western Air Command in Ahmedabad. A graduate of the National Defense Academy, the Security Services Staff College and the National Defense College, he is a certified flight instructor, with over 5,000 flight hours of experience.
It should be noted that Singh is the fourth officer from the Sikh community to lead the Air Force, after Air Marshal Arjan Singh, Air Chief Marshal Dilbag Singh, and Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa.
