GUWAHATI: The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been extended by another six months in eight districts of Nagaland and parts of Arunachal Pradesh. The decision was made after a detailed examination of the law and order situation in the northeastern states.

The AFSPA gives the armed forces sweeping powers to search and detain any person in any area defined as "disturbed." The central government has declared these areas as such based on ongoing security challenges assessed by the government.

Bangaland, Dimapur District, Newland, Chumukhdima, Mun, Kipir, Noklak, Pak and Fern will remain under AFSPA. Another area specifically under the police stations of Kohima, Mukokchung, Longlang, Wakha and Zonabuto has again been declared a disturbed area.

Three districts in Arunachal Pradesh will remain under AFSPA as the move has reportedly been made for the benefit of the armed forces in carrying out their operations across the concerned sensitive areas.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said that the AFSPA has been lifted in 70% areas of the northeastern states, though it is still being enforced in Jammu and Kashmir.
