Now experts have warned that Goa, after Wayanad, could be the victim of the next landslide. He expressed concern that the rampant collapse of hills and destruction of trees in the state might one day remind Goa of the same tragedy from Wayanad.

Known for its unique topography and rich biodiversity, Goa has been cutting hills to accommodate its commercial and infrastructural development.

An environmentalist effort

To stop the erosion of these huge hills, environmentalists have stepped up their efforts with private and government-led construction projects taking preventative measures.

Deforestation for mining has affected about 350 sq km of forest areas in the Western Ghats, leading to loss of biodiversity and wildlife.

The soil type of Wayanad and Goa is similar

Environmentalists argue that these areas of Goa, similar to the land of Wayanad, are particularly vulnerable to landslides and erosion.

Both regions are located in the Western Ghats and have similar soil types, especially lateite, which is known for its high water absorption but is prone to erosion when disturbed.

The General Secretary of the Rainbow Warriors Federation, Abhijit Prabhudesai, has stated that Goa has experienced several landslides this year.

Three major landslides were reported in Khandepar village alone. He says the hills can be traced back to the construction of the Konkan Railway in the 1990s.

He mentions that this has led to extensive landfilling and the destruction of natural slopes.

Although the governments have promised to stop it, hill cutting is increasing uncontrollably, he said.

Tourism is the source of income

The blood of the residents is that the state pays more attention to development projects that give priority to tourism and infrastructure.

They point out that uncontrolled construction can lead to loss of biodiversity, more pollution and water scarcity.

Furthermore, they argue that these decisions are made without adequate public consultation, leaving out local communities and environmental experts.
