Quebec’s chief coroner has ordered a public inquest into the death of Normand Monier, the man who used medical assistance in his death to end his life after complications during a stay at Saint-Jerome hospital.

The public inquiry, which will be chaired by Coroner Dave Kimpton, was launched following a request by the Minister of Internal Security Francois Bonnardel.

According to the coroners, it will allow “everyone interested to express their views regarding the circumstances of this death in order to analyze all the contributing factors, with the aim of making recommendations to prevent deaths in similar circumstances.”

Last January, Normand Monier, a 66-year-old man with quadriceps, went to the hospital in Saint-Jerome to be treated for a respiratory virus. He developed a large pressure sore on his buttock, and on March 29 he sought medical help to die to end his suffering.

Monier’s death sparked widespread reaction in the Quebec legislature, where opposition parties united in calling for an independent investigation, alleging abuse and calling his death a “true disgrace” to the province.

Minister of Health Christian Duba accepted their request. The regional health board, CISSS des Laurentides, has also launched an internal investigation.

Details of the coroner’s investigation, including hearing dates, will be published later.
