Brazilian star footballer convicted in rape case, 9 years in prison Achi-News

Rio de Janeiro: The court sentenced Robinho, former star of Real Madrid and Manchester City, to 9 years in prison for rape. Brazil’s star striker, Robinho, was found guilty in a case of gang rape in Italy.

The court sentenced him to 9 years imprisonment. The incident happened in January 2013. In 2017, Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison in Italy for his part in the gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman. At the time he was playing for AC Milan.

At that time he moved to Brazil. Afterwards, Italy demanded action against the Brazilian government. According to Sky News, a court in Brazil has now ruled that he must serve the prison sentence in his own country, following Italy’s request.

Judges at Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice voted to uphold Robinho’s sentence. Eight out of 10 votes in the Superior Tribunal of Justice (STJ) case were in favor of Robinho’s arrest.

Brazil’s star footballer will have to serve the sentence in his own country. Robinho’s lawyer, José Eduardo Alcomin, told the court that his client wanted a second trial in Brazil on the basis of national sovereignty. That is, he will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Robinho has played 100 international matches for Brazil. Robinho won two La Liga championships during his four-year spell at Real Madrid. He later joined Manchester City for a record fee of €32.5 million.
