A woman who for decades has called for less and less welfare government says she is prepared to make an exception for her Northern Territory rare earth mine.

In a speech today, Ms Rinehart said that the perception of her as being heartless when it comes to the welfare of the Government is wrong. “While I generally disagree with the concept of handouts from the government, there are some extreme circumstances where I now recognize that they may be necessary, to act as a safety net for those who n struggle to keep their position on the Forbes 100 rich list.

“Without these leaflets I would be forced to survive on the revenue of only ten iron mines. So I think it is appropriate in these cases for the Government to step in and lend a hand”.

She said her views on the role of government had been misinterpreted. “When I’ve called on the government to get out of people’s lives, to reduce spending, to reduce welfare, I was talking about unemployed people or those on lower incomes, not underage billionaires obviously need society’s help. That’s the compassionate side of me that a lot of people don’t see”.
