Virat Kohli won the player of the match award for starring in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden victory in IPL 2024.

It is still early days of IPL 2024 and Virat Kohli has already set the pace with a brilliant knock of 77 for Bengaluru hat-trick Royal Challengers laid the foundation for their four-wicket win over Punjab Kings on Monday night.

Opening the innings, the batting maestro dominated the M Chinnaswamy Stadium boundary with stylish strokes to build an innings that included 11 fours and two sixes. With the RCB fans anticipating a three-figure score from the man who once made a habit of churning out centuries with surreal consistency, Kohli chipped one to hole to the deep back fielder in an anticlimactic finish.

After his innings, Kohli was captured happily chatting with someone on his phone and social media users speculated that judging by the former RCB’s reactions, he must have been with his family.

The win was RCB’s first game of the season after they suffered a loss to defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the season opener last Friday. They overhauled the target of 177 with four overs to spare.

IPL 2024 is the first competition that Kohli has been a part of since he took a break of almost two months from any form of cricket to be with his family.

Kohli, one of the best batsmen to play the game, acknowledged the love he continues to receive from his fans.

“People talk about a lot of other things when you’re involved in sport – achievement, statistics, numbers. But when you look back it’s the memories you create. Rahul (David) bhai in the changing room saying the same thing these days. When you play, play your heart out because you’re going to miss these times. The love, appreciation and support I have received has been incredible,” said Kohli after the match.

RCB now have a three-day break and will return to action on Friday when they face Kolkata Knight Riders at home.
