Cracking Down on Crime: NYPD steps up resurgence in NYC Subway System. ” – Reuters

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is rolling out a new initiative this week, deploying additional officers to the city’s subway system to crack down on fare evasion, the New York Post reported.

Called “Operation Fare Play”, the initiative sees hundreds of officers being sent underground to various stations throughout the city. The main concern of the personnel on this shift will be to check the operation of the turnstiles to ensure travel prices.

From Monday onwards, members of the public can anticipate an increased police presence which should last at least the whole week.

This approach to governance echoes a series of recent high-profile incidents within the transit system, where NYPD leaders have cited an increase in related crimes as the primary reason.

The idea to promote subway safety arises as a direct response to various incidents, of which a train in Brooklyn is a good example, where shots were fired during a dispute near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.

Although the accidents are still rare, we must look more closely at the safety options. Although the overall reduction in the number of major crimes and murders shows only a slight decrease compared to the previous year, serious cases highlight the need for active and effective policing.

According to the NYPD, subway crime decreased by 15.5% compared to the previous 12 months, in part due to the fact that transit cops started searching bags last month.
