Rani Mukherjee started her film career with ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’. But he didn’t get that popularity from that movie. During this period, Rani’s ‘Ghulam’ was also released, in which she had a small role. Rani got recognition from the song ‘Ae Kya Bolti Tu’ from ‘Ghulam’. In such a situation, during an interview, Rani Mukherjee shared an anecdote related to this film.

Rani Mukherjee said – The makers didn’t like my voice
‘Ghulam’ was released a few months before ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. For ‘Ghulam’, the makers had decided to bring in a dubbing artist for Rani. Because the makers were not sure whether Rani’s real voice would work for the film or not.

Rani Mukherjee said- My voice was not a normal sounding voice. My voice was different from others. So I think at the time, the makers didn’t want to take these bets on me. Because I had Aamir Khan with me in the film, who was already an established actor. Even ‘Ghulam’ director Vikram Bhatt had explained to me that he wanted to hire a dubbing artist only because he had heard from the editing room about my voice that this girl’s voice was slightly different.

Sridevi ji’s voice was also dubbed in many films.
Rani Mukherjee shared that in those days it was very common for female actresses to have dubbing artists. There were many actresses from the South working in Hindi cinema, who did not have a strong command of the language. Especially Sridevi ji. Sridevi ji’s voice was dubbed for years, and she was my favorite actress.

I remember Aamir Khan told me – Rani, you know that your favorite actress Sridevi ji’s voice has been dubbed in many films. It does not matter. We have to do what is best for our film. At that time he was made a bad cop. This was a joint decision taken by the makers of the film. To be honest, I don’t think he gave it much thought. The makers wanted to play it safe.

Karan Johar liked my voice a lot
Rani Mukherjee shared that Karan Johar was the first director who decided to keep her original voice and not dub it. When Karan came to know that Rani’s voice was dubbed by someone else, he was shocked. Rani said maybe the makers don’t like my voice. Hearing this, Karan Johar said that he liked Rani’s voice. He wanted to retain Rani’s voice in the film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. Rani was very happy with this statement of Karan. He said- I am very happy that Karan, being Karan, has taken such a decision. Because even if my voice was called ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, it would have been very difficult to convince the other makers about my voice.
