T Prabhakar Rao was the former Chief of Telangana Intelligence Bureau. On his orders, the phones of the opposition leaders were tapped.
The Hyderabad police have named former State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief T Prabhakar Rao as the main accused in the ongoing phone tapping case in Telangana. According to an NDTV report, T Prabhakar Rao is currently in America and a watch notice has also been issued against him. The data was obtained by illegally tapping the phones of opposition leaders during the BRS government on Rao’s orders.
Police investigating other police officers
Currently Rao’s house in Hyderabad has been searched. Searches have also been conducted at more than 10 places, including Shravan Rao’s house. Shravan Rao runs a Telugu TV channel called I News.
Shravan Rao is said to have helped install phone tapping equipment and servers from a local school site while living outside the country. Many other Telangana police officers are also being investigated in this regard.
The issue of phone tapping is being debated in Telangana. During the tenure of former Telangana CM Chandrashekhar Rao, data was obtained by tapping the phones of opposition leaders.
Three officers have been arrested
Three officers have already been arrested in the case, including Additional DCP Tirupattana, Additional SP N Bhujanga Rao and Deputy SP Praneeth Rao. Police said Bhujanga Rao and Tirupathanna, who were arrested last week, have confessed to illegally tapping the phones of private individuals and destroying evidence. N Bhujanga was posted in the CM Security Cell during the BRS government in Telangana. Opposition leaders’ phones were allegedly tapped during BRS’s tenure for monitoring.
Meanwhile, Tirupatanna has been accused of being part of surveillance teams that allegedly tapped the phone calls of opposition politicians. He reported to former SIB chief T. Prabhakar Rao. T Prabhakar Rao is also under investigation in this case.
Evidence was destroyed on the orders of Prabhakar Rao
Deputy SP Praneet Rao was arrested earlier this month. He was accused of creating profiles of unknown people and illegally spying on them. Apart from this, he was also accused of deleting data from computer systems and electronic gadgets. The evidence is said to have been destroyed on the orders of Prabhakar Rao. The order was reportedly given a day after the Congress defeated BRS in the 2023 elections.
Those who were kept under surveillance included the current Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, BJP and Congress leaders as well as people from the BRS. Apart from this, Telugu actors and businessmen were also on alert.
