Widespread drought, warmer weather and minimal snow cover during the winter mean Canada could see a fierce fire season throughout the spring and summer after unprecedented burns last year.

In what is now considered Canada’s worst fire season to date, fires burned more than 15 million hectares of land over more than four months in 2023. About 230,000 people were evacuated from their communities, aided by the deployment of 2,000 Canadian military personnel. 5,500 emergency firefighters were brought in from other countries.

This year, Environment and Climate Change Canada expects higher-than-normal temperatures to continue across the country, although precipitation levels — a key aspect of fire risk — are harder to predict.
