The ridge of high pressure that favored the Maritimes with mostly clear and excellent viewing conditions for the solar eclipse at the start of the week is starting to move east. As it moves to a position east of the Maritimes, cloud cover will increase from the west. Along with the cloud there is a chance of showers in western New Brunswick and southwestern Nova Scotia late Wednesday afternoon through the night. More cloudiness and a chance of scattered showers for the Maritimes on Thursday.

Thunderstorms in Texas play a role

A slow-moving cluster of thunderstorms that brought flooding and flash flooding concerns to the state of Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday is playing a role in the expected rain for the Maritimes on Friday. The area of thunderstorms will mature into a large low pressure system as it moves north into Ontario by the end of this week. Although the center of that weather system is not moving directly into the Maritimes, the associated weather fronts will sweep through Thursday night and Friday. The fronts bring rounds of rain and showers with them.

Expect rain and April averages

Patchy showers, rain and fog are expected mainly on Thursday night. Periods of rain on Friday will be followed by further scattered showers on Saturday. Early indications show general rainfall of five to 20 mm for the Maritimes but with possible pockets of 20-to-40 mm. Among the areas that could pick up the higher rainfall totals are parts of southern New Brunswick and the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. That is a fairly typical spring rain event for the region and as long as there is no significant increase in the expected rain, it does not cause much risk of flooding or flash floods.

Despite the saying “April showers bring May flowers,” April is not the rainiest month in the Maritimes. Average monthly rainfall for the state’s capitals varies between 60 and 98 mm. For Fredericton it is the seventh wettest month on average, for Halifax it is the sixth wettest month on average, and for Charlottetown the eighth wettest month on average.
