A modern art gallery in Germany has fired an employee after discovering that the budding artist had hung his own work in an exhibition.

The 51-year-old had drilled two holes in a wall to install his painting in Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne.

The local media reported that the man pulled the stunt in the hope of achieving his artistic development.

A spokesman for the gallery said the artwork was not on display for very long.

“The supervisors notice something like this immediately,” Tine Nehler told the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, adding that the piece had been returned to the artist.

The man worked for the gallery’s technical services team and described himself as a freelance artist.

His artwork measured 23 inches by 47 inches (60 by 120 centimeters) and was hung in an empty passageway.

As well as ending his employment, he has also been banned from the gallery.

The gallery is one of the largest modern art in Europe and includes works by Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí among others.

A few months ago a similar incident took place in the city of Bonn in Germany.

Staff were packing an exhibit at the Bundeskunsthalle when they noticed an additional painting had been displayed by a member of the public.

“We think it’s funny and we want to get to know the artist. So get in touch! There is no problem. A word of honour,” the gallery posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The artist in question got in touch to reveal it was her.

Danai Emmanouilidis said she had always wanted to have one of her paintings in an exhibition. “I smuggled it in with a giant hoodie over my legs,” he told local public broadcaster WDR.

Her female portrait called Georgia was eventually auctioned by the gallery and the proceeds were donated to an art charity called ArtAsyl in Cologne.
