In an attempt to facilitate commuters, Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced a 25% reduction in fares as a special package on the auspicious occasion of Eid ul Fitr.

In a statement, the PR said: “Railway ticket prices will be reduced by 25% for the first three days of Eid-ul-Fitr.”

This discount will be available on all types of trains and classes. However, the discount will not apply on special Eid trains, explained a PR spokesperson.

Last week, the PR issued instructions to all Railway superintendent of police to tighten security in trains as well as in stations to avoid any untoward incident during Eid days.

The department had directed all Railway SPs to depute adequate force at the exit and entry points of each railway station and strict vigilance to be maintained on suspicious persons, said an official in the ministry.

Pakistan Railway Commando Police would be deputed at vulnerable installations and in trains, while bomb disposal staff would also be kept alert to search for luggage and passengers at railway stations.

“The SPs directed Railways to conduct a complete check and search of empty racks before trains reach the platforms for departure to their destinations,” the official added.

A nation to celebrate Eid tomorrow

Earlier in the evening, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has announced the sighting of the Shawwal moon in the country, which means that the first day of Eid ul Fitr will fall on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by the main chairman of the body that saw the moon, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, following a meeting in Islamabad.

Addressing a presser in Islamabad, the head of the committee said that the decision was taken on the basis of the testimonies received from different parts of the country.

Besides the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee members, officials of the meteorology department, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), and the Ministry of Science and Technology also attended the central committee for huddle moon sighting.
