After a year of study and projects, it’s almost summer break for Lethbridge post-secondary students. But between now and then, students will have to write their final exams.
Students are already starting to feel the strain.
“I think in terms of what we’re hearing from students right now is that support is much more heavily weighted by students for help finding resources when it comes to completing assignments,” said Celine Gilbert , Lethbridge College Student Association representative. president of finance and operations.
The University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College know their students will be under extra stress for the coming weeks.
That’s why they offer extra academic and mental health support as well as stress relief events.
“We offer a wide variety of services to support study skills, exam preparation and all that stuff. So those are services that are available to students,” said Mark Slomp, executive director of student services at the University of Lethbridge.
But it’s not just students who are incredibly busy – welfare and academic support staff are seeing a flood of requests for help this exam season.
“It’s not necessarily stressful, but it keeps us busy. It’s one of those things where I see all the students coming through and remember my own student days and think, ‘Oh yeah, I don’t miss that.’ But we’re here to help,” says Jayne Warry, academic strategist at Lethbridge College’s Learning Café.
Students are not just worried about exams, as many are also looking for jobs after graduation or summer employment.
“With many diploma students, I think they are hit by that shock of where did the two years go? And a lot of the time they’re not quite ready to enter the workforce after that,” says Gilbert.
University of Lethbridge students begin their exam period on Thursday. Lethbridge College students will have a little longer to study before their exams start on April 22.
