The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the VVPAT devices fitting case. The Supreme Court says that the hearing in this case will take place on April 16. A bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta said it will hear all the petitions related to the case next Tuesday.

The Supreme Court requested answers from the central government and the Election Commission

On April 1, the court sought a response from the Election Commission and the Center on the petition of social activist Arun Kumar Aggarwal. The petition demanded full counting of VVPAT slips in the elections. On April 3, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who appeared in the Supreme Court on behalf of the ADR, demanded that the petition be discussed as soon as possible. Senior advocate Gopal Shankar Narayanan also appeared in court in this case. He said that the elections are near and if the matter is not heard then this petition will become useless. After that, the Supreme Court said that it will soon hear the petition filed by ADR along with other matters.

Requirement to match votes with VVPAT slips

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding that the VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips be aligned with the EVMs). VVPAT is an independent vote verification machine, which shows whether the vote cast by the voter has been presented correctly or not. Currently, there is a practice of verifying only five selected EVMs using VVPAT slips. Supreme Court lawyer and social activist Arun Kumar Aggarwal also filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding full counting of VVPAT slips and matching them to EVMs.
