57 companies and manufacturers are responsible for 80% of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement. These companies are involved in fossil fuel and cement production worldwide.

According to an analysis published by the London-based think tank Influence Map, Saudi Arabia’s national oil company Saudi Aramco ranked first among the top emitters, accounting for 4.8% of the world’s total CO2 emissions between 2016 and 2022. In second place was the Russian Gazprom. Carbon Majors is a database of the largest oil, gas, coal and cement producing companies in the world. It helps measure emissions from fossil fuel and cement production and product use.

According to the analysis, most mega-producers have increased fossil fuel production and associated emissions since the Paris climate agreement compared to the previous seven years. 58 out of 100 companies saw an increase in emissions during this period. The highest increase occurred in Asia. 13 out of 15 companies in Asian countries emitted about four percent more between 2016 and 2022 compared to 2009 to 2015.

These companies are responsible

According to the report, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and BP account for 31 percent (44,000 million tons) of the 1,42,100 million tons of CO2 emissions tested. At the same time, Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Coal India and the National Iranian Oil Company are responsible for 33 percent (46,500 million tons). National and state-owned companies are responsible for the remaining 36% (51,600 million tons). Among these, companies engaged in coal production in China and Russia are mainly responsible.

Four Indian companies on the list

Four Indian companies were also included in the list of the 122 largest oil, gas, coal and cement producers in the world that contributed to CO2 emissions between 1854 and 2022. This ranks Coal India in tenth place. Coal India accounted for 1.49 percent (2,939.1 million tons) of global CO2 emissions during this period. Apart from this, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is ranked 46th. Similarly, Singarni Collieries is at 61st position and Adani Enterprises at 118th position.
