Sitamarhi was once part of the North West Muzaffarpur parliamentary constituency. Thakur Yugal Kishore Sinha became the region’s first Member of Parliament in 1953. In 1957, Sittmarhi and Pophri became two separate parliamentary constituencies. After that, the demarcation was changed in 1977 and instead of Popri, a parliamentary constituency of Shabah was created. Pophri is included in the Sitmarahi parliamentary constituency. The Sitamarhi Lok Sabha constituency, the birthplace of Mata Janaki, has been a bastion of socialists since the beginning. In the first election of 1952, Acharya JB Kripalani won from here on the Praja (Prasopa) Socialist Party ticket.

BJP still has no nomination from Sitamarhi
