A yellow rain warning covering southern and eastern regions, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, is in place between 1am and 6pm on Tuesday, amid fears some communities could be cut off by flooding.

Meteorologists also predicted that homes and businesses could suffer flooding, particularly in southern Scotland and the south central Netherlands, along with the possibility of road closures on Tuesday.

Another yellow warning for rain was issued on Wednesday covering the west, including Glasgow, Oban, Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire, and Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, where heavy rain was forecast to hit with the risk of flooding between 9am and 6pm.

The Met Office warned people to expect bus and train journeys to take longer on both days, while drivers were told to be aware of spray and flooding on the roads adding extra travel time.

The Met Office warning for Tuesday said: “Flash flooding or deep water is possible, with one or two communities temporarily cut off by flooded roads.”

Cloud and rain will slow down across parts of Scotland on Tuesday, it was expected, but it will turn brighter elsewhere with scattered showers throughout the afternoon.

Unsettled conditions will continue into Wednesday as more cloud and rain arrives from the west and pushes east throughout the day.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Homes and businesses could suffer flooding, causing damage to some buildings, this is more likely in the south of Scotland and the south of the Central Netherlands.

“There is a slight chance of power outages and loss of other services for some homes and businesses. Spraying and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, along with possible delays or cancellations of train and bus services – most likely in the south of the warning area.

“Flash flooding or deep water is possible, with one or two communities temporarily cut off by flooded roads.”

Met Office meteorologist Oli Claydon said: “With the rain warnings, it’s just a matter of knowing your flood risk. The rain pushes further north quite quickly before the wind takes over.”
