A 5,500 year old stone and mud brick gate was discovered by researchers (Ancestors Rising). This ancient gate was discovered in an archaeological dig near the ancient city of Tel Erani in Israel. It is believed to be the oldest known gate in Israel.
The structure was discovered during excavation work before the installation of a water pipe near an industrial zone in an area called Kiryat Ghat. According to reports, the excavation has also revealed part of a fort system dating back to the Bronze Age, around 3,300 years ago.
How is a huge structure possible?
According to the Antiquities Authority, the discovery sheds light on the development of urban centres. It provides information about the strategy followed by the citizens of that time.
Evidence of social organization
Commenting on the discovery, Director of Excavations Emily Bischoff said, “This is the first time a gate as large as the Early Bronze Age IB has been discovered. Stones had to be brought from afar to build gates and walls of forts. Mud bricks should be made and the walls of the fort should be built. As this could not have been done by a single individual, the fort system provides evidence of social organization that represents the beginnings of urbanisation.”

Martin David Pasternak, a researcher at the Israel Antiquities Authority,
“Every merchant, traveler or enemy wishing to enter the city was likely to pass through this impressive gate,” he said.
Dr Yitzhak Paz, an archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority who specializes in the Early Bronze Age, said, “This area was an important early urban center in the region during the Early Bronze Age. This website was a big and big part. It was an important settlement system in the southwestern region of the country during this period,” he said.
