During today’s total solar eclipse, April 8, the Sun, Moon and Earth will align, causing darkness during the day, as the Moon completely covers the Sun. The Sun is eclipsed for a total of four minutes, during which its mysterious outer layer remains bright. It is worth noting that a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and completely covers the surface of the Sun.

Will ISRO’s Sun mission be very useful?

According to a HT report, Aditya L1, the first solar mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), is in a position to track the Sun during a total solar eclipse. Aditya L1 will observe the Sun during a solar eclipse and try to understand the behavior of the Sun during this period. It helps ISRO study the star’s chromosphere and corona, which is the outer layer of the star’s atmosphere.

What does Aditya L1 do during a solar eclipse?

ISRO had launched Aditya L1 only last year. Earlier this year, on January 6, four months after launch, Aditya-L1 reached Lagrange Point 1 (L1 Point). The Aditya L1 mission is loaded with six instruments that will track and observe the Sun from the Lagrange point 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Aditya L1 will use two of its six instruments to detect the Sun during a solar eclipse. These two instruments are the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) and the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT).

What else does Aditya L1 do?

During this total solar eclipse, the Sun’s corona (outer layer) appears short of Earth because the Moon blocks the star. Otherwise, the corona (outer layer) would not be visible from Earth. The Aditya L1 mission aims to deepen our understanding of the Solar System and the impact of solar phenomena, including the photosphere. Aditya L1 will also study the effect of solar winds and associated radiation.
