The sowing areas under this year’s buckwheat will decrease by about 10%. Such a forecast was voiced by Svitlana Lytvyn, head of the analytical department of the Ukrainian Agricultural Business Club Association (UKAB).

This year, UCAB expects to sow 125,000 hectares with buckwheat. The predicted harvest is 162,000 tons.

It should be noted that last year in Ukraine there were large buckwheat crops, in fact overproduction was observed. The final consumer immediately felt this thanks to the low prices – about 28 UAH per kg, which is equal to the price of 2020. That is, since 2020, the prices of all food products have risen significantly, and buckwheat is sold below the price. This is exactly the factor that leads to the reduction of the buckwheat areas sown.

“Fluctuations in buckwheat prices in Ukraine have been observed over the past 10 years. The acreage also changes every year. So, in 2022, the area of buckwheat crops amounted to more than 121 thousand dunams. At that time, almost 148,000 tons of crops were harvested. And the price of groats was UAH 71/k “third. Last year the area increased to 139,000 dunams. Ukrainian farmers collected 207.5 thousand tons of raw materials. And the price of buckwheat dropped to UAH 50/kg,” explains the expert.

And she added that the average price in Ukraine for the three months of 2024 is 28 UAH per kg. Such changes in the cultivated area, and accordingly, the price are also related to the fact that buckwheat is a product for the local market.

“We cannot export buckwheat because there is no demand for it in the world market. Buckwheat is part of the consumption culture of several countries. These are the former CIS countries and some of them are eastern countries – Japan, China. That is why we observe such “fluctuations” from year to year. One year it is a crop It’s particularly profitable, but at the same time the consumer suffers, another year it’s a favorable price for the consumer, but at the same time the farmer bears losses,” notes Svitlana Litvin.
