The Glasgow Times previously reported that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called to the town’s Chapel Street at around 5.10pm on April 5 after a fire broke out in a derelict building near the New Open Kitchen.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The force previously said officers were assisting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at the scene.

Now, Police Scotland said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Glasgow Times:

The inferno photos were taken by local resident Matt McCulloch, who called the emergency services after smelling fire.

He told The Glasgow Times on Friday night: “The fire started at about 5.10pm and I made the first call at about 5.14pm because we were all unsure whether it was someone burning rubbish or not.

“I came back after I got home 20 minutes later and it was chaos.

“The roof caught fire and fire crews and the police began to close the entire area, and now at 8:00 p.m. almost every entry point is blocked.

“Initially, when I called 999, I knew the fire crew would need access and there were several people’s cars on the road that were inside New Open Kitchen.

“I had them move their cars, and I helped evacuate the whole area.

“You can see and smell the smoke all the way to Hundred Road near the viaduct.”

“The situation escalated and the roof began to lose structural integrity.

“Then the fire crews started rushing with hoses and the police took a tougher stance with the fence, manually directing traffic and closing access points.

“Then you understand how serious it is.”

Glasgow Times:

Mr McCulloch was able to take pictures of the scene using his drone.

He said: “I do drone surveying as well as landscape photography, so I always have my drone with me, and I decided to take it up in the sky to get the footage and pictures.”
