Eleven months after the violence in Manipur, the Election Commission is gearing up for the challenging task of conducting Lok Sabha elections in the state. Chief Electoral Officer Pradeep Kumar Jha said that more than 24,500 IDPs have been identified as voters to vote in the upcoming elections. Special arrangements were made to provide assistance to voters living in relief camps.
Preparations for the Lok Sabha elections continue in Manipur amid violence
A total of 2,955 polling booths will be set up in Manipur for the Lok Sabha elections. 94 special polling stations are also created to provide voting facilities to the displaced persons. Pradeep Kumar Jha said, “Special teams have been formed to conduct voting in the state. We have also started a voter awareness activity. After the violence in Manipur, there is disappointment and negativity among some people. In such a situation, these activities will help displaced people. This has been prepared keeping in mind the sentiments.”
So far 219 people have died in the violence that has been ongoing since May 3 last year. About 50,000 people were displaced from their homes due to this violence. Today they live in aid camps. Let us tell you that Lok Sabha elections in Manipur will be voted in two phases on April 19 and 26.
