Children whose innocence and smiling faces come to mind as soon as we mention their names. At the same time, there are some children in our society whose childhood was taken away from them for various reasons. You and I see such children at railway stations, traffic lights, markets and other places, but few of us pay attention to their rehabilitation. Despite this, there are some people in our society who pay attention to the development of these children. There is one such couple living in an unknown village in Maharashtra’s Latur district, not only supporting such children but also educating them and making them stand on their own feet. The couple established a shelter to educate underprivileged children and make them independent. Today they are the parents of about 51 sons and daughters.

Ashram is built on 14 dunams

Sharad and Sangita Jhar opened an ashram named ‘Maja Ghar’ to bring together the destitute, separated from their families and their children belonging to poor families. This ashram is situated on 14 acres of land near Budhoda village of Ausa Tehsil. The couple run it with the help of their organization Manus Pratistan. Let us tell you, the ashram is built on an area of 1.10 dunams, while the rest of the land is used for agriculture and various crops are grown by the children.

I want to make the children independent

Sharad Jar said, ‘Mahatma Gandhi introduced the concept of ‘Nai Talim’ in 1937, under which the dream of making the villages independent and self-reliant was envisaged. Similarly, I want my children to be independent. We teach children to make sculptures and other items. He said that the ashram’s expenses are raised from agriculture and from the sale of the items created by the children.

The couple became the support of these children

Let us tell you, so far the couple has adopted 51 children. Those adopted include children from red light districts, orphans, children of sugarcane cutters and children of farmers who committed suicide.

Such a thought came to mind

Sharad said that in 2016, when he saw a tribal girl doing tricks in Pune, the idea of working for poor children came to his mind. The girl was very talented, but she was denied an education because she belonged to a poor family. Due to lack of opportunities, such children turn to crime.

Initially, Jar Devanti established an ashram with 70 children in 2019 in the hilly area of Vantakali village in Prali tehsil. However, he was forced to leave after two years due to political pressure. He then shifted to Ambjogai in Ketgaon and finally started living in Latur district in March last year. The ashram is now home to children aged six to 16 years.
