India gives green signal for cooperation to Maldives, export of essential goods despite disputes Achi-News

India has lifted export restrictions on certain commodities like eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar and dal to Maldives in the current financial year. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that these exports to Maldives have been allowed under the bilateral trade agreement between the countries during 2024-25.

Remove export ban to Maldives

Shipments of these goods will be exempted from any existing or future restriction/ban on exports during the 2024/25 financial year to Maldives starting on April 1, the government said in a notification.

Eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, catch, stone aggregate and river sand are allowed to be exported to the Maldives.

Export of these items to Maldives will be exempted from any existing or future export restriction/ban, DGFT said.

There was usually a restriction or ban on the export of these goods in the past. The specified quantity allowed is Potato (21,513.08 Ton), Onion (35,749.13 Ton), Rice (1,24,218.36 Ton), Wheat Flour (1,09,162.96 Ton), Sugar (64,494.33 Ton), Stonegrat (224.2 Ton), Ton. Mentioned as river sand (million tonnes).

Proper permission is mandatory for the export of river sand

For the export of river sand and rock aggregates, CAPEXIL will ensure that suppliers and extractors have obtained appropriate licenses and that sand mining is not done in a Coastal Management Zone area prohibited under the Coastal Management Zone Notification, the notification said.

Also, export of river sand and rock aggregates will be allowed if the exporter obtains the necessary environmental clearances/no-objection certificate from the designated nodal authority of the state governments from which the river sand is sourced, the ministry said.

“This permission is subject to any state laws/judicial orders relating to ‘river sand’ and ‘stone aggregate’ mining,” he said.

India is a major trading partner of the Maldives under the 1981 Trade in Goods Agreement, and the value of trade has increased significantly in recent years. The 5% increase in the current announcement also includes eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour, and pulses.

Meanwhile, due to China’s influence, the Maldives has asked India to withdraw its military forces stationed at its second flight platform by this month.
