A former Quebec Hydro employee accused of spying for China has pleaded not guilty to additional charges.

Yusheng Wang was indicted today on charges of carrying out preparatory actions on behalf of a foreign entity and informing China of his intentions.

In November 2022, Wang became the first person charged with economic espionage under Canada’s Information Security Act, when he was charged with four counts including fraudulent use of a computer, fraudulently obtaining a trade secret and breach of trust.

Federal prosecutor Mark Cigana says the new charges were added after reviewing evidence and facts already gathered in the case.

Wang, who was released on bail, entered the guilty plea at a courthouse in Longueuil, Que., on Montreal’s south shore.

He said he intends to fight to clear his name.
