Against the backdrop of the increasing use of ‘Shri’ instead of their rank in the names of Indian Coast Guard officers, the President’s Secretariat said in an RTI reply that the rank of Coast Guard and Defense Forces officers has been promoted to their names and not ‘Shri’. In May 2023, the Ceremonial Section of the President’s Secretariat published a letter stating that for both serving officers and retired officers, their rank should be prefixed to their name and no minister should be used.

The President’s Secretariat, in response to an RTI request, confirmed that the order in this regard also applies to Indian Coast Guard officials. Defense officials said that this is a step towards maintaining the protocol of using ranks for Indian Coast Guard officers. According to him, it has come to light on several occasions recently that Indian Coast Guard (ICG) officers have been misused in various media. This contradiction is contrary to the established service traditions and the notified government directives. The use of the correct degree in official communication is not only a matter of formality but is also an integral part of our service tradition.
