The issue of the politics of the dynasty is discussed a lot in the politics of the state. The Janata Dal (Secular) Party of Karnataka is also an example of this, where the entire party now seems to depend on one family. In Karnataka, JDS is contesting three Lok Sabha seats in alliance with BJP and in two of the three seats, JDS has given a chance to family members only. Deve Gowda’s son-in-law CN Manjunath is contesting on a BJP ticket.

The dynasty rules JDS

How dominant the dynasty is in the JDS party can be gauged from the fact that nine members of the family are engaged in politics. Former Prime Minister Deva Gowda himself is a Rajya Sabha MP. while the son Kumaraswamy is a Member of Knesset from Channapatna. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita is an MLA from the Ramanagara seat in Karnataka, and his son Nikhil, who is a JDS youth wing leader, also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Mandya seat and the 2023 assembly elections, but lost both times. face.

The old Mysore region is the stronghold of JDS

Deva Gowda’s elder son and former minister HD Revanna is the MLA from Holenarasipura seat. His wife Bhawani Hasan is a member of the district panchayat and his son Prajwal lost the last Lok Sabha elections. Now they are trying their luck again in the general elections. Ravana’s second son Suraj is also an MLC. In this way, the Deva Gowda family is a member of all the four houses, including Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. In the last Lok Sabha elections also, three members of the Deva Gowda family contested the Lok Sabha elections and this time again three members of the family are in the Lok Sabha election field. The Old Mysore region of Karnataka is considered a JDS stronghold as the Vokaliga community has a majority here and the Deve Gowda family also belongs to this community.

The dynasty has become the weakness of the JDS

Professor James Manor of the University of London follows Karnataka politics closely. In a webinar during last year’s assembly elections, he said family politics was causing the biggest blow to the JDS. Because of this, the party is heading towards a centralized and dictatorial leadership. The influence of JDS is limited to the Vakliga community of old Mysore and some areas in northern Karnataka. Opponents also accuse the party of promoting dynasty politics. However, JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy denies the allegations of dynasty politics and says that when we don’t have capable candidates, only then our family members contest elections so that our party’s interests are protected.

DK Shivkumar teased

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also directed the JDS to field only family members and said, ‘Don’t they have other candidates…none of them will be able to win. The party has lost its power and if they really have influence then why did they make their son in law contest elections on BJP ticket? BJP and JDS have an alliance for Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. The JDS has three Lok Sabha seats under the alliance. Whereas BJP will contest the elections on 25 seats. JDS has seats in Mandya, Hassan and Kolar. HD Kumaraswamy is contesting from Mandia, Prajwal Revanna from Hassan and M Mahesh Babu from Kolar. Deve Gowda’s son-in-law and renowned cardiologist CN Manjunath is contesting from the Bangalore Rural seat on a BJP ticket. CN Manjunath will be pitted against DK Shivukmar’s brother DK Suresh.
