Mumbai: The Nagar Alley police on March 31 arrested a 29-year-old man, Sahil Sheikh, for allegedly defrauding a woman of nearly Rs 9 lakh under the guise of helping her adopt children.
The case dates back to November 2020, when the woman was introduced to the Sheikh through a friend, who allegedly offered to help her adopt a child. According to the police, the victim is a 46-year-old woman who lives in Kandivali East and currently works as a caregiver. After experiencing difficulties conceiving during her 15-year marriage, she asked to adopt a child.
Sheikh claimed that he arranged for a child to approve them and asked for funds for the adoption process. He then collected personal documents and Rs 1.7 lakh from her, and provided a photograph of the girl, but later informed her of the boy’s demise due to Covid-19. He then promised the complainant another child.
The sheikh then informed the victim about a girl who lived with her grandmother, who was unable to take care of her. Taking advantage of this situation, he demanded more money from the victim, luring her with the promise that all the properties owned by the girl’s grandmother would be transferred to her in the future. As a result, he managed to extort Rs 9.14 lakh. Despite the payment, the child was not handed over to her.
In addition, Sheikh misused the victim’s documents to secure a motorcycle loan. When she realized the scam, the woman filed a case with the Nagar Alley police in November 2022.
After his arrest, Sheikh admitted that he had no connection to an orphanage or any institution. A police officer said that Sheikh worked as a security guard and often changed his address. He lives in Borsova, Andrey West, and was arrested with the help of technical means. No previous cases have been filed against him.
