“Two-year-old Satvik’s survival after a 20-hour ordeal in Karnataka was a miracle”

Vijayapura: The survival of two-year-old Satvik Mujagunda, who fell into an open well in Karnataka’s Vijayapura, is miraculous and challenges the medical field as the toddler survived the nearly 20-hour ordeal without any health complications, a doctor said on Thursday.

Dr. Archana Kulkarni, the chief medical officer at the Government Hospital of India, told the media that Satvik is perfectly fine.

As he fell into the open well with his head down, he was sent for a CT scan to Vijayapura District Hospital.

“This is a miracle and a challenge to the world of medicine. He miraculously survived the tragedy. The survival of the two-year-old boy without food, water, air and light in the dark 20 meters down in a narrow hole is a miracle,” said Dr. Kulkarni.

She said the boy was unharmed and his pulse rate, oxygen levels and all other vitals were normal.

Although the narrow tube inside the open borehole did not allow the boy to move very easily for about 20 hours, he does not even show symptoms of fatigue or a hint of illness after the ordeal, the doctor added.

Meanwhile, the senior leaders cheered the successful rescue operation and congratulated the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district, police and local authorities who made it possible.

Prime Minister Siddaramaiah said: “The day and night work of the authorities and the public who tried to save the child deserves appreciation. Many prayers of people and his family brought success. The child joining his parents after the victory over death is a moment to cherish. I am happy. Despite repeated tragedies, people show negligence in closing Drilling wells are open after drilling”.

JD-S state president and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said Satwik had triumphed over death and returned to his parents.

“Let him recover soon. The most challenging rescue mission was successful and it is a matter of immense joy. The entire country owes the efforts of NDRF, SDRF, fire and emergency services and police,” he added.

BJP leader and former VP Baswarj Bhomai stated that prayers of scores of people have yielded results after the two-year-old boy came out alive.

“My heartfelt congratulations to the team members who carried out a 20-hour rescue operation. It is our duty to ensure that these failures do not repeat themselves,” he said.

Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil, who is also the Vijayapura district minister, appreciated the efforts of the teams involved in the successful rescue of the two-year-old boy who fell into a daycare center at Lachchana village in the district.

Expressing his joy that the boy was alive, he hailed the efforts of the NDRF, SDRF team, fire and police teams who carried out operations for about 20 hours. He also thanked the local people for supporting the operation and the district administration for coordinating the overall process.

After learning of the incident on Wednesday evening, the minister instructed the district administration to immediately begin rescue operations. He was in continuous contact with the district administration until the end of the operation on Thursday afternoon.

The minister directed the district administration to conduct a survey in the district to locate bore wells that remain open. Noting that there is already a provision in the law that allows stricter actions against those who leave drilling wells open, he said that legal measures will be taken against those who did not take care to close wells.

Satwik fell into an open bore well, 400 feet deep, while playing in the field on Wednesday evening. According to the police, the bore well was drilled on Tuesday in his parents’ agricultural land to provide water for sugar cane and lemon crops but its opening remained closed. While playing and wandering on the ground, the toddler fell into the well at around 18:00 and the child got stuck at a height of 20 meters.
