HALIFAX –

A monthly subsidy of $30,000 intended to preserve the old Cape Breton railway will not be renewed by the Nova Scotia government.

Economic Development Minister Susan Corkum-Groeg says the decision was made after CN Rail acquired a stake in the line that runs across the island from St Peter’s Junction to Sydney, NS, last fall.

Corkum-Greece says it concluded that there were no private sector plans in the works to develop the railway, which has since lapsed.

Freight rail service ended in 2015 when Genesee & Wyoming Inc. – sole owner of the line at the time – ended its Cape Breton operations due to lack of business.

The former Liberal government reached an agreement with the company to keep the line in place while other business opportunities were sought.

Corkum-Groeg says there is no word on whether CN wants to abandon the line.
